NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team steps onto the field for their second game of the 2012 season on Thursday as they host St. Mary's College of Maryland. The Captains dropped their first contest of the year by one goal on Monday to No. 14 Washington and Lee.
The Captains hope to bounce back with a win against the Seahawks. The two teams met last year near the end of the season with St. Mary's winning 16-12. The Captains' last win against the Seahawks came in the 2010 season where they won 14-13 in overtime.
After one game,
Jessica Singer is leading the Captains offensively with three goals.
Lauren King and
Ashton Marshall both netted two against Washington and Lee while
Maddy Connor and
Becca Geist each have one.
Defender
Emily Johnson has four ground balls and two caused turnovers while
Monica Evans is leading in caused turnovers with three and also has three ground balls. CNU goalkeeper,
Hannah Wilkerson, has eight saves.
The Seahawks returned their points leader from last season in Lauriann Parker. She scored 26 goals and had 46 assists in 2011. Another offensive threat returning is Erin Shackelford who scored 30 goals and had 20 assists.
Also returning is the Seahawks' goalkeeper Colleen Simpson who started every game in 2011 and earned a 9.61 goals against average and a .521 save percentage.
