NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University men's lacrosse team dropped a close game to Washington and Lee in their season opener today at Captains Field. Senior
John Glaser scored two goals for the Captains.
The Captains jumped out to a 1-0 lead less than a minute into play as junior
Chase Walton fed the ball to junior
Kyle Pasta who scored the first of just four goals for the Captains. Two and three minutes later the Generals scored man-up goals to take a 2-1 lead.
Penalties were a factor for both squads as CNU racked up nine for a total of eight minutes while the Generals also had nine but for 12 minutes total. The Captains took advantage on one of their man-up opportunities and Washington and Lee was able to capitalize on four of theirs.
Each team was able to put away one more goal in the first period for a 3-2 Generals lead heading into the second. Glaser took advantage of a man-up opportunity after an illegal body check sidelined General Cameron Dabir bringing the score to an even 3-3.
The teams traded goals but Washington and Lee was able to score three in the last half of the second period to stretch their lead to three. The halftime 4-7 score held for the rest of the game.
The Captains dominated play in the second half, outshooting the Generals 18 to 10. But while the Captains had possession for the majority of the half they were unable to penetrate the Generals defense and put points up on the board.

Ari Elgort took every faceoff for the Captains and won nine of them for a .643 faceoff percentage. Freshman
Brenden Dwyer played a great defensive game leading the team in ground balls and caused turnovers with three of each.
Junior
Andy McGregor totaled 12 saves and Generals goalkeeper Patrick Jennings had 10.
Garrett Paglia scored three goals for the Generals while Sam Mott scored two. Dabir led with four assists for Washington and Lee.
The Captains return to action tomorrow at noon as they host Randolph College.
