LEXINGTON, Va. -- The CNU men's tennis team will open the 2012 spring opener on Saturday, as they travel to Washington & Lee University for a 2:00 pm match. Both teams are ranked in the Atlantic South Region, with the Captains collecting a preseason No. 10 ranking to the Generals No. 8 in the ITA poll.
Christopher Newport will be led by nationally ranked doubles tandem
Eric Shulman and
Matt King. The CNU pair starts the season ranked fourth in the nation and second in the region after a fourth place effort in the ITA Small College National Championships. Senior
Gian Heyer leads the way in singles, ranked 15th in the region. Heyer was 9-5 in singles last season and 2-1 this fall.
Washington & Lee features three players ranked in the region and two in the nation's Top 50. Junior Hayden White has been slotted in at the No.1 singles spot for three years and comes into the year ranked 18th in the nation. He's got 49 career victories and is a two-time All-American.
