NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- This weekend, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team will tip off in the Freeman Center for the first time in 2012-13, putting their unbeaten 3-0 record on the line as they face LaGrange College (2-2) and Piedmont College (4-1) in USA South Athletic Conference action. The home opener against LaGrange is also the conference opener, and the first time in program history that the two teams will face off.
Tip is set for 2:00 pm on Saturday against the Panthers, and then also at 2:00 pm on Sunday as the Captains take on the Lions. Live stats and live video will be available of both contests at CNUsports.com.
Christopher Newport has featured solid defensive play through the first three games, not allowing an opponent more than 52 points so far this year. Holding their opponents to just 48.0 points per game, CNU has also picked up an average of 13.0 steals per game in the early going. Offensively, sophomore
Camry Green is averaging a double-double with 14 points and 11.3 rebounds per game, while junior
Tia Perry has added 11.3 points per game.
First year head coach
Bill Broderick guided the Captains to a win of the Marymount Tip-Off Tournament with victories over Gettysburg College and Marymount University, and then followed it up with a road win at Roanoke. The games this weekend are the first in the Captains' final season in the USA South as they prepare for a move to the Capital Athletic Conference next year.
LaGrange and Piedmont are both in their first year as members of the USA South. The former comes into the game with a 2-2 overall mark and losses to No. 19 Emory University and Berry College. The Panthers wins have come over Birmingham-Southern and Oglethorpe, and are featuring a high-octane offense so far this year that includes five players averaging over 8.0 points per game. As a team, LaGrange is pouring in 85.0 points per game, among the most potent in the nation, led by Heather Miller and her 21.8 points per game. A three-point heavy shooting squad, the Panthers have taken 119 trey's in 285 total shots.
Piedmont has raced out to a 4-1 start in the first five games, led by Lauren Hamel and Alyssa Jones. Jones is averaging 12.2 points, 4.2 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game, filling the stat sheet while also grabbing 10 steals. Hamel has a team-high 14.2 points per game for head coach Jamie Purdy, who is in her eighth season at the helm for Piedmont.
