Balanced Effort Leads No. 4 CNU Volleyball Past Peace, 3-0

The victory marks the 13th straight win for the Captains

Box Score
RALEIGH, N.C. – Behind a well-balanced attack, the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport volleyball team extended its winning streak to 13 as the Captains took down Peace, 3-0 (25-8, 25-17, 25-16), on Tuesday evening at the Hermann Center.

During the contest, Bailey Jensen posted a match-high nine kills on just 11 swings. The senior standout also recorded a pair of blocks and two aces. Four other Captains had at least four kills, including Terran Bargeron and Abby McIntyre, who each hit .500 during the three-set sweep.

With the victory, the Captains improve to 21-2 on the season, including a pristine 7-0 in USA South action. The setback drops Peace to 8-14 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

In the first set, CNU set the tone early after jumping out to a huge 12-3 lead. Jensen got things rolling with two kills, while McIntyre launched an ace. Later, after a Captain miscue momentarily snapped the streak, the squad quickly regrouped and went on a huge nine-point run in the middle of the set to put the frame away.

Chastity Lacy and Jessie Kolden both blasted two kills during the surge, while Jensen added a pair of aces. Alyssa Kidd, who helped pace the attack, dished out five assists and chipped in with a kill during the streak that pushed CNU's lead to 21-4. Although the hosts made a modest push at the end of the frame, Christie Fellows eventually capped the set with a rocket, which gave the squad a 25-8 victory.

In the second stanza, the Pacers held tough and battled Christopher Newport close in the early going. Bargeron collected two kills and Brooke Moore lined her team-leading 32nd ace of the season, but the Captains found themselves deadlocked at 10. After Fellows broke the tie with a kill, the visitors capitalized on a pair of Peace errors to grab a three-point lead at 13-10.

Although the hosts eventually pulled back within one, CNU never relinquished its advantage. Bargeron and Kolden unloaded two kills apiece in the waning moments of the frame before Hughes capped off the set in style. The sophomore teamed with Kolden on a block before uncorking a pair of kills, including the clincher, to secure a 25-17 victory in the second.

Leading by two sets, CNU got off to another strong start in the third to help clinch the sweep. Conway and Chance Rye each chipped in with a block and blast during the early portion of the frame, while McIntyre fired two bullets on the way to a 14-8 edge.

Once again, the Pacers whittled away at their deficit and pulled within three, but the Captains responded. Jensen ended Peace's run with three kills and a block, which forced the hosts to call a timeout trailing by seven at 20-13. After that, Jensen added another laser before Katie Jarrett chipped in with a block and kill on the final two rallies to clinch the sweep with a 25-16 win in the third.

Conway finished with a match-high 21 assists, while Abby Hogge had 12 digs. Kolden also chipped in with six kills for the Captains.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Friday when the squad kicks off the Beacons Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts. CNU will open up the tournament with a top-25 showdown against No. 23 Southwestern at 2 p.m. before facing UMass Boston at 6 p.m.
