NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Third-seeded Christopher Newport (10-8-0) will open the 2012 USA South Tournament at 4:30 pm Saturday, taking on Greensboro College (7-10-0) at Captains Field. Live stats will be available for the Quarterfinal matchup on Saturday at CNUsports.com.
CNU will face the sixth-seeded Pride in the tournament opener, the last appearance CNU will make in the USA South Tournament. The Captains have won two of the last three conference championships.
Offensively, the Captains' season is featuring some impressive individual performances, led by junior forward
Emma O'Reilly. O'Reilly now ranks second all-time in career goals with 35 and has tied for the third most goals in a season with 16. She has led an offense that is averaging three goals per game and chipping in has been senior
Dani Gunderson. The midfielder has posted a career-best 32 points on 13 goals and six assists. Junior
Carly Utterback has also set the single season mark for assists, with 11 this year.
Greensboro defeated the Captains earlier this season on the home field, 3-1, led by Allison Gibson with a pair of goals. She has led the team this year with 26 points on 12 goals and two helpers, while three other players in double figures.
Admission to the game will be $6 for adults and $3 for faculty/staff, seniors and children.
