Captains Face Meredith in Final Regular Season Home Game

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The final regular season home game for the Captains women's soccer team is set for Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm. Christopher Newport (6-8, 4-3) will take on second-place Meredith College (10-4, 6-1) at 2:00 pm on Captains Field.

The matchup will be the final regular season home game CNU will play in USA South action, as the Captains transition into the Capital Athletic Conference in 2013-14. CNU will close out the 2012 season with three straight on the road before the opening round of the USA South Conference Tournament, held on the home sites of the top four seeds.

Conference tournament seeding implications will be heavy on Sunday, as CNU is locked in a three-way tie for fifth place, just one game out of a home game in the Quarterfinals.

The Captains put up seven goals on William Peace Saturday, shutting out the Pacers to improve to 6-8 this season. Winners of four of the last five games, CNU has featured a high-octane offense in that span, outscoring opponents 24-3. Senior Dani Gunderson is leading the way offensively, scoring 11 goals with four assists for 26 total points. She posted the 8th hat trick in school history on Saturday, scoring three goals for the first time in her career against the Pacers. Junior Emma O'Reilly has added a career-high 12 goals while Carly Utterback has poured in a team-leading eight assists.

Meredith features the league's leading offense, scoring one more goal than the Captains have this season behind a well-balanced attack. Five different players are in double figures, led by junior Jessie Davis, with seven goals and eight assists, and rookie Taylor Brown has added eight goals and four assists. Goalkeeper Kelsey Hopper has posted a goals against average of just 1.07 while stopping 82.9% of shots against her.
