Captains Drop 1-0 Decision at Virginia Wesleyan

Meghan Gumbs makes eight saves in setback

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The CNU women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback tonight, on the road vs. Virginia Wesleyan College (3-0). The Captains played on Foster Field in Virginia Beach for the third straight game to open the season, falling to 1-2 on the season.

CNU withstood a barrage of shots in the first half, as the Marlins put 11 shots up the first 45 minutes. Junior goalkeeper Meghan Gumbs made eight saves to keep the home team off the board. The Captains offense, though, mustered just three shots in the opening stanza, with two on frame. Both defenses stood up through

The CNU defense stopped bending and broke just five minutes into the second half, though, when the Marlins scored the only tally of the match. Jessica Edelman made a run down the right side and connected on a pass from the left from Bre Ingargiola.

Both teams took five shots in the second half, with the Captains holding a 3-1 advantage in shots on-goal. Sophomore Emma O'Reilly and senior Kendall Dishaw each had two shots on-frame in the contest to lead the way for CNU. Gumbs allowed just one goal while making eight saves in net for the Captains.

Christopher Newport returns to action this Saturday as they play host to the Captains Classic, welcoming Western Connecticut State and Kean University, along with Va. Wesleyan. The Marlins will play Kean at 1:00 pm on Saturday, followed by the CNU vs. Western Connecticut State matchup at 3:00 pm. On Sunday, Va. Wesleyan plays WestConn at 1:00 pm, followed by CNU vs. Kean at 3:00 pm.
