VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- CNU (1-1) led from start to finish on Sunday, as they took care of DeSales University (0-2) on the second day of the 2011 Marlins Tournament in Virginia Beach, Va. The Captains won a 3-1 decision as Dani Gunderson and Carly Utterback each scored for the second straight game to open the season.

It was sophomore forward Emma O'Reilly who started things off, though, for CNU as she scored on a run down the right side in the 16th minute of action. O'Reilly knocked home the unassisted shot into the left side of the goal from inside the box.

CNU dominated possession and peppered the Bulldogs goalkeepers with shots on goal throughout the contest. The Captains had 16 shots in the first half, putting seven on frame as Michelle Churchman collected six saves. CNU's defense was stingy, allowing just two shots in the frame, and the Captains took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, CNU added another goal to its lead with 13 minutes remaining.  Rookie Kelsey Snyder passed into the box for Utterback, who connected into the left corner for the insurance goal.Brady Walsh would score for the Bulldogs just under four minutes later, but Gunderson would score with less than a minute remaining for the final,  3-1.

DeSales amped up the offensive pressure in the second half, but junior goalkeeper Meghan Gumbs was up to the task. Gumbs made six saves in the game, allowing just the one goal. The CNU offense showed pinpoint accuracy, with nine of their ten shots in the second half coming on frame. O'Reilly led the way, taking eight shots with seven on target, including the early goal. Ten different Captains had a shot in the game, totaling an impressive 26 in all with 16 on-net.

CNU returns to action on Wednesday, September 7 on the same field they've played the first two on, but instead of a neutral site will be playing the home team, Virginia Wesleyan College (2-0), at 7:00 pm.
