NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's soccer team suffered it's fourth one-goal loss of the season today, in a 2-1 setback against Roanoke College (5-1-1). CNU falls to 2-4 overall this season.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first 45 minutes, as the wet conditions kept the offenses at bay. Just three shots were taken by both teams as CNU put two on-frame off the foot of Dani Gunderson (Newport News, Va.).

Less than ten minutes into the second half, though, the Maroons found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. Sarah Valero served in a pass from the left corner that got by a CNU defender and to the feet of Rebekah Adams. Adams lofted a shot to the center of the goal for the first lead of the match.

The Captains offense upped the pressure, taking several shots over the next 10 minutes, but it was an own goal that finally tied the score for CNU. Sophomore Carly Utterback (Springfield, Va.) got loose down the left side and sent a cross into the box. Senior Kendall Dishaw (Salem, Va.) had a defender slide in front of her shot attempt and get a foot on the ball toward the net, scoring on their own goal in the 72nd minute.

Roanoke answered quickly, to re-take the lead with the eventual gamewinner. Less than two minutes later, Adams scored again off an assist from Stephanie Parenteau.

With 17 minutes remaining, both teams saw their chances; CNU's best came on a header from Dishaw that pounded off the crossbar and a second chance from rookie Sarah Perrett (South Riding, Va.) was blocked. Junior goalkeeper Meghan Gumbs (Mastic, N.Y.) made five saves, with four in the second half, to keep the Roanoke offense at bay.

CNU will now head to Salisbury for non-conference action on Wednesday at 4:00 pm, and will then open up USA South aciton next weekend, as they host Mary Baldwin College and Shenandoah University.
