SALISBURY, Md. – The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team finished up the regular season with a 17-7 loss to #5 Salisbury University. The Captains are now 13-5 while the Sea Gulls improve to 17-2.
Meghan Harkey led the Captains with three goals.
The Captains scored first off a free position shot just five minutes into the game from
Rachel Tomlinson. Salisbury scored the next six to take a 6-1 lead with 15 minutes left in the first half. The Captains scored the next two, again off free position shots to pull back within three of the lead. The Sea Gulls were able to score three more before the end of the half for a 9-3 lead at halftime.
The Sea Gulls extended their lead with five goals in the first nine minutes of the second half to make it 14-3.
Kaitlin Quigley scored her second goal of the game at 19:55 in the second half. Salisbury scored one more before Harkey scored her first of the game to make it 15-5.
Salisbury scored two more to take a 12 goal lead before Harkey scored two unassisted goals in the last seven minutes of the game to make it a 17-7 final.
Hannah Wilkerson had 14 saves in the game while
Ashton Marshall scored a goal and won three draw controls. Defender
Morgan Layton caused two turnovers and also had three ground balls. Wilkerson and
Stephanie Green also picked up three ground balls.
The Captains will be playing in the NCAA tournament set to begin on May 11 and will find out their opponent and location tomorrow at 9:30pm during the live selection show at
