Captains Fall to St. Mary’s, 16-12

ST. MARY'S, Md. – The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team fell to the Seahawks of St. Mary's College 16-12 despite four goals from senior Meghan Harkey. The Captains slip to 13-4 while the Seahawks improve to 12-6.

Goals went back and forth in the first half where the score was tied three times. The Seahawks scored first two minutes into the game and just seconds later the Captains equalized with a goal from Rachel Tomlinson with assist coming from Kaitlin Quigley.

The two teams swapped pairs of goals to make is 5-5 at 7:59 in the first half. In the last four minutes of play the Seahawks scored three straight goals to take an 8-5 lead but with just 50 seconds on the clock Harkey scored her second goal of the game to bring the Captains to within two.

Lauren King brought the score to 8-7 with an unassisted goal just a minute into the second half. But the Seahawks went on a five-goal run in just over three minutes of play to extend their lead to 13-7 which proved too much for the Captains to overcome.

The Captains scored five goals in the last 21 minutes of the second half while the Seahawks added three for a final score of 16-12.

Leading the way for the Captains was Harkey with four goals and two assists. Scoring two each were Quigley, Tomlinson and King. Elizabeth Bryant and Kelly Lane added one apiece. Monica Evans had a game-high four caused turnovers while Tomlinson and King led with three ground balls each. Hannah Wilkerson made 12 saves for the Captains.

The Captains return to action next Saturday, May 7, as they travel to Salisbury, Md. to take on the fifth-ranked Seagulls of Salisbury University.
