VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Christopher Newport University men's lacrosse team fell to Virginia Wesleyan 16-6 tonight. The Captains dropped to 5-5 while the Marlins improved to 6-5.
The Marlins got off to a 5-2 lead in the first period. They scored the first two goals of the game and
Matt Gleisner scored first for the Captains at 9:40. The Marlins scored two more before
Chase Walton scored his first goal of the game with just 37 seconds left in the period. But just 20 second later Virginia Wesleyan scored another to make it 5-2.
CNU scored first in the second period with an unassisted goal from
Billy Crist to pull within two. But the Marlins scored three before the period ended to take an 8-3 lead at halftime.
Virginia Wesleyan extended their lead with a six-goal third period without allowing a goal from the Captains. After a Marlin goal in the fourth the Captains went on a three-goal run to pull within nine. But with 4:46 to go the Marlins scored the last goal of the game to make it a 16-6 final score.
John Glaser and Walton each scored a pair for the Captains while Crist and Gleisner each scored one. Crist and
Greg Basch led the Captains in ground balls with four and Basch won 11 of 25 face offs.
Andy McGregor made 11 saves for the Captains.
The Captains took 33 shots in the game while Virginia Wesleyan took 38. The Marlins edged the Captains in ground balls too with 39 to the CNU's 32.
The Captains travel to York, Pa. to take on York College on Saturday, April 9, at 12:00pm.
