Captains Fall to Hampden-Sydney, 12-7

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Christopher Newport University men's lacrosse team fell to Hampden-Sydney, 12-7, dropping them to 6-8 this season while improving Hampden-Sydney to 10-4. The Captains' goals were spread out among seven players while five of Hampden-Sydney's came from senior Cole Hawthorne.

The Captains and Tigers played a first close period ending with a 2-1 Tigers' lead. Hampden-Sydney scored the first goal at 8:49 and CNU answered just three and a half minutes later with a goal from Jackson Kibler. At 2:50 the Tigers put their second goal of the game on the board.

Hampden-Sydney scored the first two goals of the second period but CNU came back and put two of their own in to pull back within one before the end of the half. Scoring for the Captains was Jake Myers and John Glaser.

The Tigers went on a four-goal run in the third period to take a five goal lead at 8-3. But the Captains fought back and scored three unassisted goals coming from Ari Elgort, Kyle Pasta and Max Braunstein. With 1:14 remaining in the third the Tigers put one more goal on the board to make it 9-7 at the end of the period.

Chase Walton scored at 9:06 in the fourth to bring the Captains back to within two goals of the Tigers. The Captains and Tigers fought back and forth for the next six minutes before the Tigers put in three quick goals between 3:44 and 2:28 to extend their lead to five at 12-7.

Elgort and George Ruddy led the Captains with six ground balls and Scott Holmes had a team-high three caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Andy McGregor made six saves for the Captains.

The Captains take on the Pride of Greensboro College in their last game of the season on Saturday, April 23, at 1:00pm.
