Captains Fall to Lynchburg, 14-5

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University men's lacrosse team dropped their final home game of the year to Lynchburg, 14-5. The Captains fall to 5-7 while the Hornets improved to 8-5.

The Captains got off to a good start as play went back and forth with no goals scored until CNU put in the first goal of the game after almost 11 minutes of play. Kyle Pasta scored off a pass from John Glaser as the Captains took advantage of an extra man opportunity.

The Hornets answered with Jeff Schwartz winning the face-off and scoring seven seconds later. Lynchburg scored again at 2:57 and with 30 seconds left for a 3-1 score at the end of the first period.

Lynchburg scored all four goals in the second period starting at 12:25. They scored their last with 53 seconds left to take a 7-1 lead at the half.

A scoring frenzy at the beginning of the third period saw three goals in the first 40 seconds of play. CNU struck first with an unassisted goal from Adam Abbate 16 seconds into the period. Lynchburg won the face-off and scored 13 seconds later. The Hornets won the next face-off as well and scored again just eight seconds later to take a 9-2 lead.

Lynchburg continued to extend their lead with four more goals before the end of the period. The Hornets scored one more in the fourth period before CNU scored three straight to end the game at 14-5.

Scoring for the Captains was Billy Crist, Matt Gleisner, Rob Koster, Pasta and Abbate. Ari Elgort led the Captains in ground balls with 10 and won 14 out of 20 face-offs taken.

Teddy Pekalski had a team-high three caused turnovers and also picked up four ground balls.

Andy McGregor made seven saves for the Captains.

The Captains return to action on Saturday, April 16, as they travel to Ferrum, Va. to play Ferrum College at 1:00pm.
