NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport's women's tennis team blanked Averett 9-0 on a chilly Friday afternoon, winning six matches by shutouts. The Captains improved to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in the USA South, remaining in the thick of the conference race and dropped the Cougars to 3-7, 2-2.

Lauren Kelly, Kim Morrissett and Melisande Downs each registered a pair of victories without losing a game.

At No. 1, the most competitive position, Sarah Stafford overcame Johanna Heikkinen 6-2, 7-5.

The Captains come right back to their home courts at 11 a.m. Saturday to face Ferrum in another USA South match.
