Melisande Downs won in singles and doubles Wednesday as Christopher Newport's women's tennis team achieved a 7-2 victory at Virginia Wesleyan.
Coming off their spring-break trip to central Florida, CNU took a 2-1 doubles lead as sophomore Downs and freshman
Jodi Noland won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles and Stafford and
Marion Gloor pulled out a tiebreaker for a 9-8 (7-5) triumph at No. 1.
The Captains then won five matches in straight sets, with victories by Stafford at 1,
Kim Morrissett -- still unbeaten in singles this season -- at 3, Noland at 4,
Lauren Kelly at 5 and Downs at 6.
CNU won't play another match until Wednesday, when the Captains will play their home opener against Washington College of Chestertown, Md.
That day also will feature a men's match between CNU and WC. The men are scheduled for 1 p.m., the women for 2:30.
