NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University men's lacrosse team beat Mary Washington, 9-8, to improve to 3-0 on the year. This is the first time the Captains have defeated the Eagles in program history. CNU was led by
Kyle Pasta who had three goals and one assist.
The Captains struck first at 12:45 in the first period with a goal from Pasta assisted by
Chase Walton. Mary Washington answered with two goals from Evan Weiss. Pasta was able to put another in the net with 1:36 left in the first period to tie the score at 2-2.
After six and a half minutes in the second period the Captains scored again to take the lead. They added to their lead just eight seconds later as
Greg Basch won the faceoff, exploded down the field, and passed the ball to
Matt Gleisner who shot and scored.
The Eagles scored the next goal to pull within one before the Captains poured on three more goals to take their biggest lead of the game 7-3. With just six seconds left in the period the Eagles added another goal to make is a 7-4 halftime score.
The third period saw only two goals with both going to Mary Washington to make it a 7-6 game in favor of the Captains.
Just under two minutes into the final period
Aaron Chrzaszcz got his second goal of the game. Play went back and forth for almost eight minutes without a goal. The Eagles scored with 5:34 left in the game to pull within one goal of the Captains. Just a minute and a half later,
Billy Crist scored his first goal of the season to put the Captains up by two.
The Eagles scored with 2:14 remaining to make it a 9-8 game and the Captains were able to hold on to that one goal lead to get the win.
The Captains were led by Pasta with three goals and one assist and Chrzaszcz and Gleisner with two apiece. Walton led in assists with two.
Teddy Pekalski led in ground balls with seven followed by Basch with five. All three defenders and goalkeeper,
Andy McGregor, for the Captains caused two turnovers each.
The Captains dominated in faceoffs winning 15 of the 20 taken. Basch won 11 while
Ari Elgort won four.
CNU led in shots with 32 to Mary Washington's 31. The Captains also led in ground balls 29-21.
McGregor made 11 saves in the goal to earn his third win of the season.
The Captains return to action next Saturday as they travel to Latrobe, Pa. to take on St. Vincent College.
