NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University men's lacrosse team defeated Farmingdale State College 13-8 in their first meeting in program history. The Captains were led by
Rob Koster who has a hand in seven of the Captains' goals, scoring four and dishing out three assists.
Koster put the Captains on the board at 8:11 in the first period off a pass from
James Kirkpatrick. Just a minute and a half later he put another goal in the net to give the Captains a 2-0 lead at 6:42. The Captains scored two more unanswered goals in the first period to take a 4-0 lead.
Farmingdale got their first goal at 10:52 in the second period but the Captains answered back just seconds later after
Ari Elgort won the face off and took the ball down the field and shot for his second goal of the season.
The Captains scored two more and then allowed two from the Rams as time was winding down in the half. But the Captains put one more up with just two seconds remaining in the half to take an 8-3 lead.
CNU scored two in the first five minutes of the third period to extend their lead to 10-3. But within three minutes the Rams were able to score two goals to pull back within six. Each team added one more before the end of the period for an 11-6 score going into the fourth.
The Rams and Captains traded a pair of goals in the fourth period to end the game with a 13-8 Captains' victory.
Koster led with four goals and was followed by
Chase Walton with three.
Matt Gleisner and
Kyle Pasta each picked up a pair while
Adam Abbate and Elgort each scored one.
Teddy Pekalski and Elgort led the team in ground balls with five apiece. Pekalski also led the Captains with four caused turnovers.
Andy McGregor played all 60 minutes in the net for the Captains and racked up 13 saves allowing only eight goals.
The Captains improve to 4-3 with the win and return to action tomorrow night as they host Otterbein College at 7:30pm.
