CNU Women's Tennis Wins Fourth Straight to Open Spring 2011

Captains Drop Alma, 8-1

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Sweeping the six singles matches, Christopher Newport's women's tennis team improved to 4-0 this season with an 8-1 victory Wednesday over Alma of Michigan.

Amid a wind that CNU coach Jenny Nuttycombe said gusted up to 25 miles per hour on Poinciana High School's courts, the Captains took a 2-1 doubles lead against a team that had won all three doubles against them the year before.

Victories by the teams of Sarah Stafford-Marion Gloor and Kim Morrissett-Morgan Huff put the Captains on top.

CNU then won each singles match, including straight-sets triumphs from positions 1 through 5 by Stafford, Gloor, Morrissett, Huff and Jodi Noland. Melisande Downs completed the shutout by rallying from a set behind to win the second set 6-1 and a match tiebreaker 10-6 at the No. 5 spot.

It was a far more decisive triumph than the one against Alma a year ago in central Florida, when five singles victories enabled the Captains to rally for a 5-4 win.

Morrissett and Huff remained unbeaten in eight matches apiece for the year. Stafford has gone 6-0 on the trip.

The Captains will complete their Orlando-area matches Thursday morning with a 9 a.m. contest against Augustana of Indiana in Kissimmee.
