NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Washington & Lee Generals (3-4) took a one-point lead with less than ten seconds to go and held on to hand Christopher Newport (5-3) its third straight loss, 51-50. A pair of free-throws from guard Meg Ingram pushed the Generals past the Captains for the narrow victory.

Both teams struggled to hold onto the ball in the game and shooting woes plagued both ends of the floor. The Generals had 17 turnovers, while CNU gave it away 15 times; and CNU shot 37.3% from the field while Washington & Lee connected on 35.4% of their shots.

The Captains built a game-high 12-point lead halfway through the first 20 minutes, on a soft turnaround jumper from sophomore Tia Perry with 11:08 remaining in the first half.  The bucket gave CNU a 20-8 lead as the Captains appeared to be in control.

The Captains knocked down just one more field goal in the first half, though, as the team went cold. The Generals closed to within four at halftime, 26-24, on a 16-6 run to end the half.

CNU's drought continued long into the second half, with just three points and zero field goals in the first 9:10 of the period. Washington & Lee also struggled though, and managed only to build a five-point lead, 34-29, with the 10-3 run to start the half.

Led by rookie center Camry Green, the Captains bounced back from a six-point deficit. Green knocked down a tough bank shot from the right side and was fouled, converted the free-throw and got CNU back within three. Next time down the floor, Perry made it 37-36 with a layup off an assist from Nicole Mitchell.

After a Generals field goal on the other end, it was Mitchell that got CNU back on track with a three-pointer to tie, and Green from the free-throw line for the lead, 40-39. The Captains run extended to 19-8 for a six-point lead, 48-42, with just over four minutes remaining as Mitchell hit a mid-range jumper off an assist by Green.

Washington & Lee teetered back into the lead with 3-of-4 made free-throws from Becca Bolton in between a pair of tough layups inside from Ingram and Katy Wilson. The latter bucket put the Generals ahead, 49-48, with 59 seconds on the clock.

A big offensive rebound on the other end gave CNU a second-chance opportunity, where senior Kimmy Hopkins stepped up with a baseline drive and pull-up jumper to retake the lead, 50-49, with 24 seconds remaining. On the other end, though, Ingram drove to the basket off a screen and was fouled on the way up. She hit both free-throws to slip back into the lead with just nine seconds on the clock.

Over the next 2.3 seconds, CNU called three timeouts to set up the final play. The inbounds came to Mitchell, whose pass to sophomore Andrea Hobbs gave her the open baseline to the basket. Hobbs layup was just a little strong, though, and the game ended with a 51-50 Generals victory.

CNU finished just 19-of-51 from the field including 2-of-10 from long-range. Washington & Lee owned a 26-18 advantage in the paint, led by Bolton. She had a game-high 15 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double. Ingram finished with 14 points and five assists, while Wilson rounded out the double-figure scorers with 13.

Green had the best game of her young career, scoring a season-high 14 points on 2-of-6 shooting, with a near perfect 8-for-9 night at the free-throw line. She also grabbed five rebounds and four steals in the setback. Mitchell finished with 13 points and six rebounds, while Perry collected eight and eight.

CNU will not play again for 11 days for the holiday break, and will travel to Lynchburg College on December 30. Tip is set for 6:00 pm.
