MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- The top-seeded Christopher Newport University women's soccer season ended today, falling 1-0 to the second-seeded Shenandoah University Hornets (15-6-1) in the USA South Championship Game. The Hornets won their first ever women's soccer title as the Captains fall to 11-8-1 overall.

Three Captains were named to the 2011 USA South All-Tournament team: seniors Kendall Dishaw, Megan Richard and junior Dani Gunderson.

Both teams struggled to get the offense going in the championship game, with just five shots on-goal combined in the contest. CNU held the edge in the first half, outshooting the Hornets 6-2 including one on-frame. The Hornets came back with two shots on-goal in the second half including the gamewinner in the 70th minute.

Off a free kick, Sarah Hensley sent a long ball into the box that got knocked away by junior goalkeeper Meghan Gumbs, but into a scrum in front of the goal mouth. After a few touches by CNU defenders, Amber Womack stepped up and put away the score.

CNU pushed in the final 20 minutes to try and find the equalizer, but was unable to score despite four shots with one on-goal. Tournament MVP Kat Terza made three saves between the pipes for the Hornets to keep CNU off the board. CNU outshot the Hornets in the game, 10-5.

The Captains lose just their second game against a conference opponent under head coach Ruth Keegan. CNU will graduate four seniors, Dishaw, Richard, Shelby Walters and Elise Haug. Dishaw ends her career fourth all-time in career goals (30) and tied for fifth in career points (68).
