CNU Faces Averett in USA South Semifinals Friday Night

Captains take on fifth-seeded Cougars at 7:00 pm

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- The top-seeded Christopher Newport University men's soccer team looks to remain undefeated on Friday when they take on fifth-seeded Averett University at 5:00 pm in the USA South Tournament Semifinals. CNU (15-0-1) earned the top spot with an undefeated 6-0-0 mark in USA South play, while Averett (11-5-2) earned a spot in the final four with a 4-1 win over Greensboro.

Averett played CNU closer than any other league opponent this season, forcing overtime in Danville before the Captains pulled away with a 2-1 victory in extra time. Senior forward Winston Mattheisen netted the gamewinner in the second overtime period.

The 7:00 pm kickoff will be the first of two men's semifinal games as part of the 2011 USA South Soccer Championships at the Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville, Va. The second semifinal will begin at approximately 7:30 pm between #2 N.C. Wesleyan and #3 Methodist, preceded by the women's semifinal round played at 12:00 and 2:30 pm.

The Captains have posted one of the most dominant seasons in school history, led by a high-powered offense and a stingy defense. CNU ranks sixth in the nation in scoring offense, with 3.5 goals per game and ninth in the nation in team goals against average (0.48). Senior goalkeeper Justin Wolfe has nine shutouts this season and 28 for his career, while posting a career-best 0.49 goals against average this season. Two-time USA South Player of the Year Brian Lybert has led the way offensively, scoring 10 goals while adding 12 assists.

Averett is led by Richard Bjornander with six goals and five assists this season, posting 17 total points. The Cougars are 11-5-2 overall this season. Timi Heikkonen and John Thrower have each pitched in 11 points, while Nate Barker has been the leader in goal with a 0.97 goals against average.
