MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- In the first road trip of the season for Christopher Newport men's soccer, the Captains suffered a 6-0 setback to Montclair State University (7-2-0). CNU slipped to 4-1-1 overall on the season after the loss.
Playing on a chilly and overcast evening at the MSU Soccer Park, the Captains surrendered two goals in the first half and four more after halftime as the Red Hawks pulled away for the team's fourth straight win.
Christopher Newport endured a barrage of shots with 27 total attempts including 11 on frame for the home team. Senior goalkeeper
Matt Yates made four saves in just under 58 minutes of action before giving way to
Caleb Johnson for the final 32 minutes.
On the offensive end, the Captains were led by
Hayden Flory with two shots while
Riley Usher,
Caleb Lewis, and
Evan Rupe each notched shots on goal in the game.
Montclair State took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute on a penalty kick and was awarded another PK in the 28th minute. On the second, Yates stood tall in between the pipes for the Captains and saved the penalty kick attempt to hold the lead to 1-0. The Red Hawks tacked on one more in the run of play in the 31st minute but Yates and the CNU defense made back-to-back saves in the final minute to keep the score, 2-0.
CNU will look to bounce back in their next game on Wednesday, September 30 against Batten University. The Captains will kickoff against the Marlins at 7:00 p.m.
