NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The top-seeded Christopher Newport University women's soccer team won its way into the USA South Tournament Semifinals with a 4-1 victory over N.C. Wesleyan (2-17-0) tonight in the opening round. The Captains (10-7-1) got goals from four different players and outshot the Bishops 39-2 in the win.
CNU, coming off a 4-0 win over the Bishops in the regular season just four days prior, again cruised to the win in the USA South Tournament Quarterfinals. CNU peppered the N.C. Wesleyan goalkeeper, Johanna Wallinder, all night, with 25 shots on goal.
The Captains opened the scoring in the 29th minute when sophomore
Emma O'Reilly (Springfield, Va.) connected on an unassisted tally for her eighth goal of the season. Under five minutes later, junior midfielder
Annemarie Weaver (Norfolk, Va.) gave the Captains a 2-0 lead with the eventual gamewinner. Weaver connected with a one-timer on a corner kick taken by
Dani Gunderson (Newport News, Va.).
The Bishops cut the lead in half early in the second half with a quick goal from leading scorer Rebecca Staylor. In the 54th minute, Staylor chipped the CNU goalkeeper off an assist by Dori Brooks.
A pair of quick goals gave CNU some insurance, however, in the 62nd and 66th minutes. Senior
Kendall Dishaw (Salem, Va.) scored on an assist by
Carly Utterback (Springfield, Va.) and senior
Shelby Walters (San Antonio, Texas) wrapped up the scoring on an assist by sweeper
Alexis Stahlman (Fredericksburg, Va.).
CNU scored four goals on 25 shots on-frame, including an impressive 16 shots on-goal in the second half alone. Wallinder stopped 20 shots for the Bishops with an impressive night in goal, as the Captains took 39 shots in the win. CNU also out-corner kicked N.C. Wesleyan, 20-0, constantly pressuring the Bishops goal line.
Christopher Newport will now advance to the USA South Semifinals at the Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville, Va. being held this Friday, November 4 at Noon. The Captains will take on #4 seed Greensboro College (11-5-1); the teams played to a 1-1 draw earlier this season.
