DANVILLE, Va. -- With less than five minutes remaining in double overtime, senior All-American Winston Mattheisen (Williamsburg, Va.) stepped up and notched the 13th game-winning goal of his career. The second-ranked Captains defeated Averett University (6-3-1, 0-1-0) in extra time, 2-1.

CNU jumped out to an early lead on the road, scoring just 2:19 into the game. Junior defender Sean Moriarty took a free kick after a foul call that was re-directed by a Cougar defender into the back of the net.

The own goal gave CNU a 1-0 lead that they would hold for over 70 minutes. Unable to add to the lead though, despite five shots on-goal, the Cougars found the equalizer in the 74th minute. Kyle Barrow connected with John Thrower for his first goal of the season, on a shot from about 20 yards out.

After regulation, it was all Christopher Newport as the aggressor. The Captains took five shots in the extra time, while holding Averett to zero. Still, Averett goalkeeper Nate Barker kept CNU off the board by making a pair of saves.

Then, in the 106th minute, rookie Jalon Brown and Denny Arinello combined to set-up Mattheisen's goal. It was the first game-winner of the year for Mattheisen, and his sixth goal of the season.

The goal was also Mattheisen's 44th of his career, moving him into sole possession of second all-time in CNU program history.

Arinello led the way for CNU with three shots on-goal, followed by Moriarty had two. Thrower took a team-high four shots for Averett, including two on-frame.

Christopher Newport, ranked second by D3Soccer.com and third by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, improves to 8-0-1 overall this season and remains undefeated in league play at 2-0-0. CNU will return to action this Wednesday, October 5 at St. Mary's College (Md.) for a 1:30 kickoff.
