NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Captains nearly clipped the USA South-leading Greensboro Pride (9-4-1, 6-1-1) on Saturday, winning 1-0 with less than three minutes to go, but a late penalty kick goal tied the score and CNU (5-6-1, 3-1-1) was forced to settle with a draw.
The Captains dictated the action all afternoon, outshooting the Pride 17-8 in the game, including a dominant 11-2 first half.
It was in the first half that CNU would take the lead, 1-0, when sophomore
Emma O'Reilly scored in the 18th minute of play. Senior
Kendall Dishaw lofted a high bouncing pass from the right sideline into the box, where O'Reilly corralled it and laced a hard shot to the right side.
The second half was much closer, as the Pride showed urgency after halftime. Greensboro had five corner kicks and took four shots in the frame, putting two on-goal, but the CNU defense was up for the task, shutting out the Pride until the 88th minute.
With just 2:30 showing on the clock, CNU committed a foul in the box and Greensboro was awarded a penalty kick. Defender Sarah Hopkins stepped up and drilled the shot into the right side of the goal.
With nothing going either way in the overtime period, each team tallied its first draw of the season.
Dishaw took six shots in the game to lead the way or CNU, while Greensboro's Sarah Lang took four, putting one on-goal.
The Captains head back on the road next weekend for USA South action in Raleigh, as they take on Meredith and Peace Colleges next Saturday and Sunday respectively.
