Schweers Joins Top Five All-Time in Scoring in 77-36 Win Over Mary Baldwin

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Senior guard Chelsie Schweers (Chesapeake, Va.) scored 19 points and joined the NCAA Division III All-Time Scoring Top Five in the process, leading the Captains (16-2, 10-1) past Mary Baldwin (4-13, 2-9), 77-36. Schweers has scored 2,439 points in her career and passed Whitter's Julie Curtis, who finished her career with 2,433 points to move into the Top 5.

Schweers scored just three points in seven minutes of action in the first half, as CNU jumped out to a 20-point lead at halftime, 40-20. In the second half, though, Schweers went 7-14 from the field and finished with 19 points in the game. She also filled the stat sheet, adding seven rebounds, six assists and a pair of steals.

CNU's leaders in the first half were Tia Perry, going 3-for-3 from the field and leading the squad with eight points, five rebounds and a pair of steals, and Nicole Mitchell, who added four points and six rebounds. Ten different players scored for the Captains in the first half, as CNU shot 47.2% from the field on 17-36 shooting.

The Christopher Newport defense had another stellar performance, holding the Fighting Squirrels to just 27.1% in the game. CNU also forced 25 turnovers with 17 steals, getting 34 points off of giveaways.

CNU reached a game-high 44-point lead with 6:03 remaining in the second half, and finished out the game with a 77-36 win. It is the 32nd straight home victory for the Captains. All eleven players got into the scorebook, with Schweers, Perry and Jerlise Bowser all in double figures for CNU. Bowser scored a season-high 10 points on 5-8 shooting. Meanwhile, Mitchell hauled in a game-high nine rebounds, adding three blocks and three steals.

Denise Johnson scored seven points and added seven rebounds for Mary Baldwin, while Iiesha Ricks and Sabrina Desper added a team-high eight points.

Christopher Newport will now head out on the road for a pair of games in Raleigh this weekend. CNU will face Peace College on Saturday at 2:00 pm, followed by a game against Meredith College on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
