NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The CNU women's soccer team (4-4-1, 2-0-0) closed out a successful opening weekend in league play with a 5-0 blanking of Ferrum College (7-2-0, 1-1-0), snapping the Panthers six-game winning streak. Junior
Kendall Dishaw (Salem, Va.) scored twice, giving her three goals on the weekend, to lead the Captains offense.
Right from the opening whistle, the Captains would have the upper hand offensively, as senior
Sam Ciaravino (Burke, Va.) posted the eventual gamewinner just 55 seconds into the game. Rookie
Emma O'Reilly (Springfield, Va.) saved the ball from going out on the goal line and lofted it over the keeper to Ciaravino for her sixth goal of the season.
Just under three minutes later, at the 3:36 mark, Dishaw would get on the board for the first time of the day, off assists by
Megan Conheeney (Ridgewood, N.J.) and
Elise Haug (Centreville, Va.). Haug's corner kick found Conheeney on the back post, who shuffled the ball across the middle of the goal mouth to Dishaw, who touched it in for the score.
With a 2-0 lead, the Captains continued to push, outshooting the Panthers in the game 26-2. CNU would break through again in the 42nd minute as senior midfielder
Katie Jaywork (Wyoming, Del.) scored her first of the season off assists by Conheeney and
Meghan Arbegast (Montclair, Va.).
Dishaw would add her second in the 52nd minute, followed by a penalty kick goal by
Dani Gunderson (Newport News, Va.) in the 56th minute, to round out the scoring for the Captains.
Ferrum goalkeeper Katie Hodkinson made nine saves in the game, playing the full ninety. Offensively, Brittany Baker and Kara Pegram had a shot apiece, while Baker put one on-goal.
CNU was led by Dishaw, with two goals, while Jaywork had a goal and an assist. Conheeney added a pair of assists to give her three on the season, tied for the team-high. The shutout was the fourth of the season by sophomore GK
Meghan Gumbs, while her defensive unit led by
Julie Jennings,
Vicki Fessler, Conheeney and
Alexis Stahlman were tremendous in holding the Panthers to just a pair of shots.
The Captains will round out the four-game homestand on Wednesday, September 29 as they host Salisbury University at 6 pm in non-conference action. Live stats will be available at www.sidearmstats.com/cnu/wsoc.
