NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Sophomore goalkeeper
Meghan Gumbs (Mastic, N.Y.) earned her second career shutout as she led the Christopher Newport University women's soccer team (2-4-1) to a scoreless draw versus cross-water rival Virginia Wesleyan College (4-2-2).
Gumbs posted her second shutout in three games after 110 minutes of work between the pipes. She made five saves as the Virginia Wesleyan offense outshot CNU12-5.
The bulk of the game was played in the middle of the park, with each team having minimal offensive opportunity. The best chance for the Marlins came early in the action, in the 17th minute. Senior Courtney Whorten sent a shot just wide of Gumbs' reach, but it glanced off the left post and out of play.
CNU saw it's best opportunity coming in the waning minutes, with just 2:30 left in the second overtime period.
Annemarie Weaver sent a long pass to
Dani Gunderson on the left side, who had a heel flick to
Kendall Dishaw, onsides and in front of her defender. After one dribble, Dishaw laced a solid shot toward the frame, but Virginia Wesleyan goalkeeper Erica Keil made the save.
The Captains improve to 2-4-1 this season with the tie, and will open USA South action this weekend as they host Averett and Ferrum. CNU will take on Averett University at 4:00 pm as a part of a doubleheader with the men's team, also opening with Averett. On Sunday, CNU will face Ferrum at 1:00 pm.
