Women's Soccer Hosts Va. Wesleyan Wednesday Night

CNU hosts cross-water rivals at 7 pm

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University women's soccer team (2-4) return home Wednesday night for a non-conference matchup with cross-water rivals Virginia Wesleyan (3-2-1). The Marlins have a game Tuesday night at Sweet Briar College before facing off against CNU tomorrow night.

CNU is coming off a split weekend in which they dominated Marietta College, 5-0, and then suffered a tough loss on the road to Roanoke, 4-1. The Captains are led by senior Sam Ciaravino (Burke, Va.), named this week's USA South Player of the Week, after posting the second hat trick of her career.

The Captains and Marlins have played even at Captains Field in the past, with the home series tied a 3-3-1. Overall, Virginia Wesleyan holds a 10-4-1 advantage on the all-time series with the Captains last win coming in 2002.

The Marlins, coached by Jeff Bowers, are returning to Newport News for the second time this season as they played in the Captains Classic two weeks ago. They suffered their second loss to Cal Lutheran and earned a 2-1 win over Frostburg State the last time they were on the pitch.

Kick-off will be 7:00 pm on Wednesday night. The Captains will also be in action this Saturday, September 25 as they open conference play against Averett University at 4 pm.
