SALEM, Va. -- The CNU women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 road decision to Roanoke College today, falling to 2-4-0 on the season. The Captains got a score from sophomore
Annemarie Weaver (Norfolk, Va.), her first career tally, but the Maroons finished with their largest margin of victory ever against CNU with the three-goal win.
Roanoke jumped out on top early, scoring in just the sixth minute of play as Cindy Suttora crossed the ball to the head of Sarah Bradley for the goal. Less than ten minutes later, the home team got another score from Jamie Johnston, who got the home field bounce off the corner of the goal frame into the net.
CNU went into the break down 3-0 when Kara Kapell put away her third goal of the season in the 40th minute of play. CNU was held without a shot in the first 45 minutes of action while starting goalkeeper
Meghan Gumbs (Mastic, N.Y.) faced eight shots in the frame, making one save.
The Captains would erase the shutout with just 2:48 left in the match, as sophomore
Annemarie Weaver posted her second goal of the season. The unassisted score was laced into the left side of the goal to get CNU on the board.
Weaver's goal would go down as the only shot of the day for the Captains, while Roanoke took 13 shots. Gumbs finished the game with three saves in goal for CNU.
Sarah Bradley led the way for Roanoke, scoring a goal and assisting on another, while taking three shots and putting two on-frame.
The Captains return home for the next four matches, starting with a home game against cross-water rivals Virginia Wesleyan College this Wednesday, September 22 at 7 pm.
