Softball Walks Off With Day One Win Over Piedmont, 3-2

Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The CNU softball team came from behind to defeat Piedmont 3-2 on day one of the Newport News Regional of the 2010 NCAA Division III softball tournament.  Piedmont scored once in the second and once more in the top of the sixth before the Captains plated two runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning and the winning run in the seventh.

Piedmont got on the board first after Raley White drew a lead off walk, and scored on a Kristen Rowe wild pitch after advancing to third.  The score stayed at 1-0 until Rebecca Renfroe singled to center and then scored White's single to give Piedmont a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth.

CNU got on the board in the bottom half of the sixth with the help of a couple of Piedmont errors.  Jessie Atkinson reached on an error and sparked the Captains as Audra Underwood scored after pinch running for Atkinson followed by Lauren Stewart who tied the game off of a single by Taylor Morgan.

After Kristen Rowe made quick work of Piedmont in a scoreless top of the seventh, the Captains got the bottom half of the inning started with a lead off walk from pinch hitter Maggie Farris who was quickly called out in a fielder's choice by Mary Kennedy.  Kennedy quickly advanced to second on a stolen base before advancing to third on a sacrifice fly from CF Ashley Mani before freshman catcher Chelsea Mitchell came up with a single to score Kennedy.

CNU advances to play in the 4:00 pm game Friday afternoon against Susquehanna, a 3-2 extra innings winner over Frostburg State.  Piedmont will play at noon on Friday against Frostburg State.
