Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA - CNU women's lacrosse dropped a close-fought battle with St. Mary's, 20-18, at Captains Field in their last home game of the 2010 regular season. The loss drops the Captains to 12-5 while improving the Seahawks to 8-7.
St. Mary's was first on the board in just under two minutes of play with a goal from Erin Shackelford.
Meghan Harkey answered just a minute later for the Captains. The next 10 minutes of play saw four goals from the Captains and one from St. Mary's, making the score 5-2 with 17:26 remaining in the half.
The Seahawks continued to gain ground on the Captains until evened the score at 8 with 4:27 left in the half.
Kaitlin Quigley scored just 12 seconds later to regain the lead for the Captains. Shackelford got her second goal of the game at 2:53 to make it 9-9. With just five seconds left in the half Harkey netted her fourth of the game off a pass from Quigley, giving the Captains a 10-9 lead at the break.
The Seahawks started the second half with a three-goal run, giving them a 12-10 lead just five minutes into the half. After exchanging goals the Captains went on a four-goal run, capturing the lead again. Each team scored two more making it 17-15 in favor of the Captains. Starting at 11:52 the Seahawks scored four straight goals giving them a 19-17 lead. The Captains got back to within one off a goal from
Rachel Tomlinson with 1:48 remaining but as the clock was winding down the Seahawks put in one more goal making the final score 20-18.
The score was even eight different times throughout the game with the lead changing four times. Leading the Captains in goals was Harkey with six, followed by
Rachel Tomlinson with four. St. Mary's was led by Lauriann Parker with nine goals and three assists.
CNU had 36 shots; just one more than the Seahawks who totaled 35. The Captains also led in groundballs with 13 to St. Mary's seven.
CNU goalie,
Gayle Robinson, had eight saves on the day.
