Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Men's lacrosse fell to Hampden-Sydney, 8-16, despite an 18-save performance by freshman goalkeeper,
Andy McGregor.
CNU started the scoring at 13:25 in the first period with a goal from
Britt Hoover off a pass from
Ray Fitzgerald. Hampden-Sydney started a five-goal run at 8:28 that extended into the second period. The Captains took advantage of two Tiger penalties scoring a goal on each man-up opportunity making it a 5-3 game with 12:50 left in the second period. The Tigers and Captains swapped pairs of goals until Hampden-Sydney scored four straight to end the second period, giving them an 11-5 lead at halftime.
After a high-scoring second period both teams settled and the third period only saw three goals. The Captains' only goal came with just six seconds left on the clock from
Dylan Godbout, his second of the game.
Cole Hawthorne had both goals for the Tigers. Hampden-Sydney added three goals in the fourth while CNU had two.
Hoover, Godbout, and
Zach Hill each had two goals in the game for the Captains while Fitzgerald and
Chase Walton added one a piece. Hampden-Sydney was led by
Micah Keller and
Nate Cundy with three goals each.
The Captains were outshot 36 t o 48 and had 30 groundballs to Hampden-Sydney's 31.
McGregor tied his game-high for saves, previously set at Marymount on February 27 where he also had 18.
The loss drops the Captains to 7-7 on the season while improving Hampden-Sydney to 11-4.
CNU hosts Virginia Wesleyan College at Captains Field on Saturday, April 24th at 7:30pm.
