ORLANDO, Fla. - Freshmen
Morgan Huff, Kim Morrissett and
Melisande Downs won in singles and doubles Thursday morning as Christopher Newport improved to 5-0 in the women's tennis season with a 7-2 victory over the Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology. CNU also defeated Ursuline, 8-1, in its last match.
The Captains won their third match in a row on a trip to the Orlando area of Central Florida, taking this victory at the Star Island Resort in Kissimmee.
They have an excellent chance to finish the trip unbeaten, since their last opponent in Florida -- Ursuline College of Ohio, which they play at 6 p.m. Thursday -- lost decisively to Hanover (Ind.), Alma (Mich.) and RIT, the three teams CNU has beaten in one of America's popular tourist areas.
An 8-3 victory by Huff and
Marion Gloor at No. 1 doubles and an 8-2 win by Morrissett and Downs at 3 gave CNU a 2-1 edge heading into singles.
No. 1 Huff, No. 2 Morrissett, No. 5
Dani Cribb and No. 6 Downs earned straight-sets victories, and No. 3
Erin Spinks took a 10-7 match tiebreaker after splitting a pair of sets against the Tigers (7-7) from the Empire 8 Conference.

Christopher Newport's women's tennis team wrapped up a 4-0 spring-break trip to Central Florida with an 8-1 victory over Ursuline on Thursday night.
Ursuline (0-5) -- located a few miles away from Cleveland, Ohio -- defaulted two matches because it lacked a sixth player, but seven Captains nevertheless played a part in on-court victories.
The doubles tandems of
Erin Spinks-Lauren Kelly and
Dani Cribb-Dana Burns each won 8-2.
In singles,
Morgan Huff, Kim Morrissett, Kelly and
Kate deLacy scored triumphs, not including Burns' forfeit victory.
The match was CNU's second of the day; the Captains won 7-2 over Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology in the morning.
After flying home Saturday, CNU will carry a 6-0 record into its next dual -- a sure-to-be-intriguing matchup with Virginia Wesleyan at 3 p.m. Tuesday on the Captains' six courts off Prince Drew Road.
