Softball Takes Two From Lynchburg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Christopher Newport University softball team completed a perfect week Sunday, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader over Lynchburg College at Captains Park. CNU, ranked #5 in the country in Division III, took the opener, 8-5, and won the nightcap, 9-4. CNU won all six games played this week and Keith Parr's squad is now 18-4 on the season.

The Captains broke open a 1-1 game in the opener with a two-run home run from Jessie Atkinson in the third inning. CNU added five runs in the sixth inning and then held off a seventh-inning rally by the Hornets for the 8-5 win. Taylor Morgan knocked in three runs and Kristen Rowe pitched into the seventh to pick up the win and improve to 6-1 on the season. Rowe struck out 11 Lynchburg batters in six and one-third innings pitched.

In the second game, CNU plated six runs in the first inning and posted 15 hits in the 9-4 victory. Megan Morris knocked in three runs with a bases-loaded double and Chelsea Mitchell added three hits as Elizabeth Holte got the win to improve to 8-3 on the year.

CNU scored 17 runs on 23 hits in the twin bill. Lynchburg fell to 10-8 on the season.

The Captains play next on Wednesday at Virginia Wesleyan. The non-conference doubleheader will begin at 2:30 in Virginia Beach.
