No. 5 Softball Sweeps Shenandoah; Holte Tosses Perfect Game

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINCHESTER, Va. - Fresh off its outstanding performance at the prestigious Leadoff Classic in Florida, CNU's fifth-ranked softball team swept Shenandoah, a team which recently took two games from No. 1-ranked Messiah. The doubleheader included a perfect game by freshman Elizabeth Holte.

During the two games CNU pitching held the Hornets scoreless in 4-0 and 3-0 games, allowing a total of just three hits.

In the opener, Kristen Rowe blanked Shenandoah on three hits, allowing just one in the first six innings. The Captains broke open a scoreless contest with four runs in the sixth, including a to-run single by Jessie Atkinson. Rowe struck out seven and walked two in improving to 5-1.

In the nightcap, which the Captains won 3-0, Holte, a freshman, tossed the sixth perfect game in CNU history, the first since Michelle Kass-Prewitt threw a gem against Oneonta St., 3-0, on March 1, 2005. The Captains helped Holte in the field with several outstanding plays. Centerfielder Ashely Mani went deep into the right-centerfield gap to take hits away from Jolisa Jones in both the second and fourth innings. On the first batter of the game for the Hornets, Catherine Pruiett's pop fly dropped inches foul down the third base line. Two pitches later she grounded out to launch the perfect game.

Jessie Atkinson had three hits and Mary Kennedy and Megan Morris two each in support of Holte who is now 5-2.

The Captains improved to 14-4 in winning their first two USA South games. They broke a five-game winning streak by the Hornets who are now 5-2 and 0-2.

CNU plays Methodist at home Saturday at 1 p.m.
