Make that a great eight for Christopher Newport's women's tennis squad so far.
CNU improved to 8-0 with an 8-1 victory Friday over Southern Virginia University at Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News.
Kim Morrissett, Erin Spinks, Lauren Kelly and
Dani Cribb put the Captains in command with straight-sets victories from positions 3 through 6 on the indoor hard courts, with none losing more than four games.
Kelly, a sophomore at No. 5, was the only non-freshman to start in singles for CNU.
Marion Gloor fell 6-4, 7-5 to
Bethany Johnson at the second spot, but
Morgan Huff rallied past
Rachel Reid 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 at the top spot for the clincher against the Knights (4-2), who attend the Mormon-affiliated university in Buena Vista.
CNU also swept the doubles matches, with triumphs by the teams of Huff-Gloor, Spinks-Kelly and
Melisande Downs-Dana Burns.
CNU will return to play Thursday at home against Elizabeth City State. The Captains are 2-0 against squads from ECSU's conference, the Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
