One of the youngest Division III women's tennis teams in the country is up to 7-0.
Marion Gloor and
Kim Morrissett took part in doubles victories and won third-set match tiebreakers Tuesday, leading Christopher Newport to a 6-3 home victory over Hampton Roads rival Virginia Wesleyan (4-2).
In doubles,
Melisande Downs and Morrissett won 8-4 to give the Captains a 1-0 lead, and CNU's No. 1 tandem of Gloor and
Morgan Huff finished an 8-5 triumph soon thereafter for a 2-0 margin.
It looked like the Captains would go ahead 3-0, but VWC's
Ashtyn Alexander, a Denbigh High alumna, and
Imee Bautista, former standout on Cox High's state Group AAA championship team, overcame a 7-4 deficit to win 9-7 over
Lauren Kelly and
Erin Spinks at the second spot.
In singles, CNU got straight-sets victories from Spinks at 4 and
Dani Cribb at 6. No. 2 Gloor and No. 3 Morrissett each won the first set, lost the second, then pulled out 10-8 match tiebreakers before darkness fell.
Bautista defeated Huff 6-2, 6-1 at 1 and Tharp overcame Kelly 6-3, 6-4 at 5 for the Marlins' singles points.
