Softball Splits Pair With Salisbury

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SALISBURY, Md. - CNU's 25th-ranked softball team split a doubleheader with Salisbury Monday, winning the opener, 5-3, before suffering its first loss of the season in game two, 5-4, in eight innings.

In the opener, the Captains built a 5-0 lead before the Seagulls rallied for three in the bottom of the seventh. CNU started quickly with two runs in the first and then tagged on three more in the fifth. Starter Kristen Rowe was cruising along with a two-hit shutout before surrendering a one-out, three-run homer. But she settled in to get the final two hitters to run her record to 2-0. Ashley Mani had three hits for CNU and Chelsea Mitchell slugged her third home run of the year.

In game two the Seagulls again rallied in the bottom of the seventh, this time scoring twice for the win.

In this game it was Salisbury which scored quickly, getting three runs in the third to lead, 3-1. Jessie Atkinson's two-run homer in the sixth tied it, 3-3, and CNU went in front, 4-3, in the eighth when Maggie Farris singled home Mary Kennedy who started the inning at second base under softball's extra inning rule. But the Seagulls got two in the bottom of the inning, with the winning run scoring on a one-out bases loaded walk.

Mani had two more hits, including a double.

The Captains host Roanoke Wednesday at 1 p.m.
