MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Top seeded Christopher Newport University (15-4-1) broke a scoreless tie midway through the second half en route to a 2-0 win over #4 Greensboro College in the semifinals of the 2010 USA South Women's Soccer Tournament being hosted at Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville. The win extends CNU's program-best winning streak to 12 straight.
Senior midfielder Sam Ciaravino (Burke, Va.) scored off a pass from Chelsea Brown (Dover, Del.) at the 67:45 mark for Christopher Newport. The goal gives her 35 for her career, tying her with Emily Renkin for most ever in CNU history. Rookie forward Emma O'Reilly (Springfield, Va.) scored an insurance goal for the Captains in the 81st minute, with Ciaravino being credited with the assist. With the assist, Ciaravino's senior campaign ties CNU's best ever offensive season, also recorded by Renkin, with 39 total points.
Sophomore goalkeeper Meghan Gumbs (Mastic, N.Y.) played all 90 minutes in net for Christopher Newport, making two saves for her tenth shutout of the season. Katie Allegro made three stops for Greensboro (12-6-1).
The Captains out-shot Greensboro 10-2, and Greensboro closed with a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Both teams had a scoring opportunity nullified by offside calls.
The Captains (15-4-1) will play in the championship match Saturday at 5 p.m. against the winner of tonight's other semifinal match between #2 Meredith College and #6 Averett University.
The winner of the title match tomorrow will claim the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament.
