NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport Captains (13-4-1, 9-0-0) capped off an undefeated conference season with a shutout of the North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops (2-17-0, 2-7-0) on Senior Night, 3-0.
Sam Ciaravino netted her sixth gamewinner of the season and added an assist in her final regular season home game and junior
Kendall Dishaw scored twice for CNU.
The Captains broke through with the eventual winner in just the sixth minute of action, as Ciaravino received a pretty pass from her classmate,
Katie Jaywork. Jaywork slipped a pass in behind the Wesleyan defender, leaving Ciaravino one-on-one with the goalkeeper, beating her for her 15th goal of the season.
The game would remain at 1-0 for the rest of the half, but CNU would add two more early in the second. Junior forward
Kendall Dishaw scored the first just 4:17 into the frame, off an assist from sophomore
Annemarie Weaver. She added a second just over three minutes later on a pretty passing play, as senior
Lauren Fleming lofted a pass toward the far post, where Ciaravino one-timed it to the middle for Dishaw's score.
The Captains outshot the Bishops by a final count of 30-3, including putting 19 on-frame. The Bishops got a shot apiece from Courtney Jamieson, Deanna Petersen and Josie Adams, including one on-frame from Adams.
CNU goalkeeper
Meghan Gumbs played the full 90 for her eighth shutout of the season, as she leads CNU to its program-record 11th straight win.
CNU will be the top seed at next weeks USA South Tournament, and will face N.C. Wesleyan, the 8 seed, on Tuesday. Game times will be released later this weekend.
