WINCHESTER, Va. -- Senior midfielder Sam Ciaravino continued her tremendous season with the lone goal in a 1-0 victory today, leading the Christopher Newport women's soccer team (12-4-1, 8-0-0) past Shenandoah to clinch the 2010 USA South regular season championship. Ciaravino took sole possession of second all-time in CNU goals, with 33, and led the Captains to their record tenth straight win.

Head coach Ruth Keegan has now directed the Captains to a second regular season title in just three years at the helm for CNU. Christopher Newport will enter the 2010 USA South Tournament as the top seed as they defend their 2009 championship.

In Sunday's contest against Shenandoah, the two teams battled for the first half, with CNU outshooting the Hornets 6-2. Neither team would find pay dirt though and entered halftime, 0-0. It wasn't long after the break, though, that CNU finally lit up the scoreboard.

Just over two minutes into the second half, Ciaravino received a pass from classmate Lauren Fleming and ripped a shot into the net for the eventual gamewinner. The goal was Ciaravino's 14th of the season and 33rd of her career in just three years at CNU. She now has 75 career points and ranks third on the all-time list for the Captains.

Meghan Arbegast added two shots on-goal for CNU while the Captains outshot the Hornets 10-4 in the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Meghan Gumbs made four saves in her seventh shutout of the season.

Shenandoah goalkeeper Kat Terza made two saves and allowed just the one goal for the Hornets. Four different players put shots on frame for Shenandoah in the game.

The Captains have just one regular season game remaining before entering the USA South Tournament  as the #1 seed. CNU will host N.C. Wesleyan for Senior Night on Friday, October 29 at 6 pm. Live stats will be available at www.sidearmstats.com/cnu/wsoc .
