Women's Soccer Drops Mary Baldwin on the Road, 8-1

Captains could clinch regular season championship tomorrow

STAUNTON, Va. -- The regionally ranked women's soccer team of Christopher Newport University continued to streak today, with an 8-1 pummeling of Mary Baldwin College (2-10-0, 0-6-0) for their ninth straight win. The Captains improved to 11-4-1 overall and maintained their perfect mark in league action, running their record 7-0.

The Captains, ranked 8th in the region in the NCAA's first release of the season last week, has won a program-record nine straight games and are unbeaten in their last ten. CNU is outscoring opponents 41-5 in that span, led by senior midfielder Sam Ciaravino.

Ciaravino scored twice today and added an assist. The five-point effort runs her season total to 30 points and ties her for sixth all-time in the CNU season points list. She also now ranks second all-time in goals scored, with 32, and third all time in career points, with 73.

he Captains scored all eight goals in the first 25 minutes of the game, led by Ciaravino, rookie forward Emma O'Reilly and sophomore forward Dani Gunderson, who each had two goals in the game. Gunderson is second on the team in points, with 20, on eight goals and four assists.
 
The freshman, O'Reilly, continued her hot streak, scoring the first two goals of the game, including the eventual gamewinner at the 5:01 mark. She now has seven goals in her freshman season and ranks third on the team in points.

Katie Jaywork and Kendall Dishaw also scored for CNU, while Dishaw added an assist. Freshman Carly Utterback had an assist to round out the scoring for the Captains.

Mary Baldwin got a goal in the 22nd minute of action, as Katherine Tarry put home an unassisted score for the Fighting Squirrels. Nichol Croman played the full 90 minutes in goal, making three saves for MBC.

The Captains return to action tomorrow at 2:00 pm, as they head to Shenandoah University with a chance to clinch the 2010 USA South Regular Season Championship.
