GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Five different players scored for the Christopher Newport women's soccer team, as the Captains (8-4-1, 4-0-0) won their sixth straight with a 5-1 victory at Greensboro College (7-4-1, 3-2-2).
Kendall Dishaw had the gamewinner in the 14th minute, off an assist by rookie
Emma O'Reilly.
Annemarie Weaver had the first goal of the game on an assist by
Elise Haug in the opening minutes to begin the offensive outburst and help lead CNU past the Pride for their sixth shutout of the year.
Weaver connected in the fourth minute of action, with a header for her third goal of the season. Just over ten minutes later, O'Reilly launched a hard shot off the crossbar, followed by the rebound from Dishaw. The eventual gamewinning goal was Dishaw's fourth of the season.
The Captains would add a third goal before halftime, as
Katie Jaywork set up a goal from senior
Meghan Arbegast. She connected from the left side, beating the Greensboro keeper, Katie Allegro.
In the second half, CNU would add two more, while the Pride got on the board as well for the final, 5-1. In the 59th minute
Lauren Fleming scored her fourth goal of the season, an unassisted tally, followed by a Greensboro goal from Hannah Coats in the 82nd minute. CNU would add a goal with just 24 seconds remaining in the match, as second-leading scorer
Dani Gunderson poked in a goal off an assist by
Shelby Walters.
The Captains got points from nine different players in the game, as CNU improved to 4-0 in USA South action this year. They outshot the Pride 25-6 in the match including 14 on-frame.
Allegro made seven saves for the Pride while playing the full ninety minutes and Coats led the way offensively, taking two shots, both on-frame.
Gunderson led the way for CNU, with seven shots and four on-frame. Weaver also had three shots, with two on-goal.
CNU returns home for USA South action next weekend, as they host Meredith College and Peace College on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. The game against Meredith will kick-off at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 16.
