Box Score 2 LYNCHBURG, VA – Christopher Newport's softball team, ranked seventh in the nation, dropped a pair of games at No. 22 Lynchburg Wednesday.
The Captains dropped game one, 8-2. LC scored three runs in the first and CNU cut the lead to 3-2 with two runs in the top of the fifth. The Hornets increased their lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth for the final margin.
Emily Garcia finished 3-for-4. Taylor Morgan was 3-for-3 and Jessie Atkinson went 1-for-3 and drove in both runs.
Lindsay Kelly started and went 4 2/3 innings, allowed seven runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out two. She falls to 10-4 on the year.
Lynchburg won game two, 11-5. A seven-run second inning led to the Hornets victory. They also scored four times in the fourth. Christopher Newport scored five times in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-5 before LC scored the four runs to pull away.
Garcia was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Katie Moyers finished 2-for-4.
Kristen Rowe lost her first game of the year, lasting 3 2/3 innings, 11 runs, seven earned, on nine hits, walked three and struck out six. She's now 16-1.
The Hornets improve to 24-5 on the year while CNU's 13-game winning streak was snapped and falls to 29-5. The Captains return to action Friday when they travel to Methodist with start time set for 2:30 pm.
