Box Score ASHLAND, VA – Christopher Newport's men's lacrosse squad dropped a heartbreaking 12-11 overtime match at Randolph-Macon Wednesday afternoon.
The Captains broke a 10-10 with 33 seconds left when Matt Gleisner put CNU ahead. The Yellow Jackets found the back of the cage with one second remaining in regulation. RMC went on to win the game with 2:55 left in the first overtime.
CNU jumped out on top with 9:55 left in the first but Randolph-Macon countered with two straight to lead 2-1 after the first period. The Captains evened it up just 91 seconds into the start of the second but the Yellow Jackets scored two in a row and Christopher Newport ended the half with two of its own to tie the score at 4-all at the break.
The Captains out-scored Randolph-Macon in the third, 4-3, to lead 8-7 after the third. CNU scored the first two goals of the fourth to lead by three, 10-7, with 9:16 left in regulation. RMC scored three straight to tie it with 5:13 left, setting up the final dramatics of the game.
Justin King led CNU with three goals and one assist. Ryan Merrell scored three times, Gleisner and Zach Hill both finished with two goals each. John Glaser had one goal and one assist.
RMC out-shot the Captains, 50-29. Jackson Tyler shattered the school record with 21 saves, breaking the old record of 17.
Randolph-Macon improves to 5-5 while the Captains fall to 6-5. CNU returns to action Saturday when they host Guilford at 1 pm.
