Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's lacrosse squad held off a late charge and defeated cross-water rival VA Wesleyan, 13-12, Wednesday night.
The Marlins scored the first two goals of the game before the Captains answered with three straight to lead 3-2 with 21:27 left in the first half.
VA Wesleyan scored twice more and CNU responded with two straight while VWC scored its final goal of the half with 7:40 left but the Captains scored the final two goals of the opening stanza to take a 7-5 lead at the break.
The Marlins scored four of the first five goals of the second half to lead by one, 9-8, with 23:02 to go. Christopher Newport went on a spurt to score five in a row to lead 13-9, its largest lead, with 6:54 left in the game.
CNU allowed VA Wesleyan to score the final three goals of the game, the final one coming with 2:49 left, but weathered the storm to hang on for the well-earned win.
Meghan Harkey led the Captains with four goals and two assists. Liz Klemens scored three times and assisted on another. Kaitlin Quigley tallied three scores. Katie Doherty finished with three assists.
Chrissy Rogers had one goal and one assist while Mea Arnold and Alyssa Burke both scored once. Shayna Sargent had one assist in the win.
VWC out-shot CNU, 33-29. Gayle Robinson had 12 saves in the cage.
The Marlins fall to 6-5 on the year while the Captains improve to 8-2. Christopher Newport hits the road Saturday when they travel to Methodist with start time set for 2 pm.
