BURLINGTON, NC – Christopher Newport's softball squad advanced to the USA South title game by defeating Shenandoah 3-1 Saturday afternoon.

The Captains scored twice in the first inning. Mary Kennedy doubled with one out and later scored on Taylor Morgan's RBI single. Jessie Atkinson singled to left and scored Katie Moyers to give CNU an early 2-0 lead.

Christopher Newport pushed across an insurance run in the second on Jordan Beadles double that scored pinch runner Lenora Harper.

The Hornets scored their only run in the top of the third.

Kennedy, Morgan, Atkinson, Danielle Steel, Emily Garcia and Beadles all had one hit for the Captains.

Lindsay Kelly tossed a complete game, allowing one run on four hits, walking three and striking out two, improving to 12-4 on the year.

Shenandoah (27-10) will play NC Wesleyan Sunday morning at 9 with the winner meeting the Captains (34-5) at noon.
